The Education of Little Tree, Paramount Pictures

Grandpa said, "It's true. I was born white, no doubt about it. But when I met your grandma, i begun to see the world thru Cherokee eyes and I begun to understand The Way. So will you Little Tree. you will learn that you can't change the rules of The Way, even if you are white And that's that."

Little Tree, this here is Willow John. He has the magic.

Willow John spoke. Have you told him of our history? he should know. This heres a story about your ancestors, Little Tree...
Long ago the Cherokee lived in these hills. The white man came and the Cherokee made a paper treaty with them. Then the government's soldiers came and said that the paper treaty had changed its words. And the words said that the Cherokee must move to the lands in the west that the government had for them. Lands that the white man didn't want, of course. And while the people were trying to understand, the government soldiers found this big old valley and ringed it in with their guns. They drove the Cherokee in there just like cattle. And they filled up that whole valley. They brought in mules and horses and said they could ride out west. Now the Cherokee had nothin' left, now did they? No homes, no farms, nothin'. But they would not ride. They walked. Now it was a long walk from their mountains and they began to die. At first only the young and the old died, and the soldiers let them stop and bury their dead. Then more died. By the hundreds, then by the thousands. The soldiers said "put your dead in the wagons'. But they carried their dead. The Cherokee did not cry. Now the white people lined up along the trail, and watched them pass by. And some of them people began to cry. Thats why they call it the Trail of Tears. But the Cherokee did not cry. They did not speak. They walked on. By some magic that i don't know, some managed to escape and make their way back, staying off the trail until they found their mountains again And they went far back into 'em. And time went on. Bye and bye, the white man forgot about them. Finally they left them in peace. Thats you Little Tree. Thats us. Thats where you come from. And thats why we're here. (Little Tree turned for only a moment to hear grandma sing. When he looked back, Willow John had disappeared.)
